Insomnia

 

Sometimes in our lives we have sleepless nights, perhaps caused by emotional stress, physical pain, or some type of medication this can often be classified as "transient" (short term) insomnia. Sometimes these events happen on and off which can be characterized as "intermittent" insomnia. When these nights start to work into weeks or more it could be "chronic insomnia." Let's look at these a little closer.

Common Symptoms of Insomnia

  • Trouble falling asleep
  • Waking up frequently at night
  • Difficulty falling back asleep
  • Waking up tired in the morning
  • Un-refreshing sleep
   

If Left Untreated, It Can Lead To

  • Tiredness during the day
  • Lack of energy
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Irritability

  • Sleep Hygiene
  • Relaxation Therapy
  • Stimulus Control
  • Sleep Restriction
   

Medications and Medical Therapies

  • Bensodiazepine Sedatives
  • Nonbenzodiazepine Sedatives
  • Melatonin/Valeriana (Valerian)
  • Ramelteon
  • Some Antidepressants/Antihistamines
